Kawaii Seal Clay Tutorial – Wagashi Style with Resin Clay & Foam Clay

Is there anything cuter than a marble-sized baby seal that looks like it came straight out of a Japanese wagashi confectionery? This little seal made from air-dry clay is ready in under 30 minutes – and the secret behind its silky smooth surface is a 2:1 combination of Resin Clay and Foam Clay. Perfect for beginners – no oven needed.

Why combine Resin Clay and Foam Clay?

Resin Clay dries to a porcelain-hard finish and forms the smooth, rock-solid outer shell of the seal. Foam Clay as the core makes the charm significantly lighter without compromising stability. The 2:1 ratio is key: too much Foam Clay and the outer shell tears while shaping; too little and you lose the weight advantage. The result – a silky smooth, feather-light figure in Japanese wagashi style – simply isn't achievable with Resin Clay alone.

Materials & Tools

  • Resin Clay (ratio 2)
  • Foam Clay (ratio 1 – marble-sized amount)
  • Black acrylic paint
  • Bamboo skewer or needle tool
  • Triangular stick or back of a craft knife
  • Parchment paper as work surface

💡 Pro Tip: The Foam Clay core helps the seal dry more evenly and without cracks – Foam Clay releases moisture more slowly than pure Resin Clay. Once dry, optionally protect with a matte sealant.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Can you mix Resin Clay and Foam Clay together?

Yes – but we don't blend them into one uniform mass. Instead, we layer them: Foam Clay as a lightweight core, Resin Clay as the smooth outer shell in a 2:1 ratio. This way you get the best of both materials.

Will the charm stay soft or become hard?

The charm becomes rock hard – the silky smooth surface looks very soft visually, but it's as hard as porcelain once dry. The Foam Clay core only makes the seal lighter, not softer.

Can I make the seal using only Resin Clay?

Yes, pure Resin Clay works perfectly. The seal will be slightly heavier, but the technique stays identical – you simply skip the Foam Clay core step.
